SHOULD THE BODYBUILDER PRACTICE SEXUAL ABSTINANCE?
Sexual abstinance as a religious duty can be a noble sacrifice. As a moral discipline it can build great strength of character if it doesnt corrode though into the subconscious and find its expression in anti-social action such as arson, misanthropy, various criminal activities, and other tragic manifestations which are often the result of trying to dam a great river of force without sufficient provision for channelling the tremendous latent energies. But according to the findings of Dr. Kinsey after interviewing hundreds of athletes, sexual obstinance has no apparent value in developing or retarding physical prowess, though lack of sleep, excessive drinking and other factors which often go with the pursuit of sex may quite likely have a measureable effect. Considerable nonsense has been written by a number of bodybuilding advisers suggesting that an athlete con supress his sexual energies by working out and building a fine body. The truth is of course, that by working out and making his body super healthy, he will proportionately increase his sexual ability--which is exactly as nature intended--that the best representations of the species should be most capable and eager to procreate. The married athlete (whose wife shares his sensual enthusiasm) need have no concern of "tearing down" his health no matter how frequently he seeks satisfaction. The unmarried athlete of America living in a hypocritical pseudo anti-sexual society does indeed face a serious social problem because if our laws were strictly enforced he would be forced to remain "continent" or face jail (if the legal force of peeping toms are on the job). It is not our province here to suggest how or if he should reconcile himself to the "Thou Shalt Not" rules of both some religions and society. But it may be some solace for him to know that purely physically speaking he would be none the worse off if he were to conduct himself like a monk or like a satyr. Page 18.
BATTLE OF THE GARGOYLES
WEIDER vs HOFFMAN---WHICH IS RIGHT? Everyone recognizes that Joe Weider (who publishes Muscle Power, Muscle Builder, Adonis, BB, ad infinitum) and Bob Hoffman (who publishes Strength & Health) are the great colossi of the muscle building world, and many are dismayed by the constant battle between the two. Recently some bitter words have been exchanged over the handling of the 1956 Mr. Universe contest at Virginia Beach and Mr. Weider has demanded the expulsion of Mr. Hoffman from the AAU, because the latter allegedly "fixed" the judging of the contest and on a silly technicality that he paid twice the pre-inflation limit set on trophy values. In turn, Mr. Hoffman has ridiculed both Mr Weider and his students, and also insinuated that Weider might be working for the Russians. Now, the writer knows considerable of the behind the scenes workings of both of these men and is convinced that neither is quite the villain the other pictures him to be. Both feign modesty but love glory which is only as it should be as there have been few great men who truthfully disliked the publics idolation. They both know that they prosper as the "iron game" prospers and neither would deliberately do anything to hurt physical culture. Weider being much younger tends to be much more progressive than Hoffman, but Mr. Weider's associate Earle Leiderman who is now reacking for up in years tends to be a reactionary. Is weightlifting and bodybuilding hurt by all the altercation--? we think not at all, rather it livens things up, keeps competition keen and keeps things from getting too dull. Our only hope is that each side continues to stay fairly evenly matched, and we would caution each to fight fair and square because the low punches hurt most those who deliver them, and in an age when Confidential magazine has made it fashionable to be involved i insinuations of even the most unique perversions, dirty digs only draw more curious fans to the accused. So slug it out fellows!
